F1 Abu Dhabi??

Hey Guys! Anyone have any ideas on what this F1 Abu Dhabi is all about this weekend??

Image
It seems like a big marketing event with those full pages ads, but is the F1 really coming to Abu Dhabi? or just a marketing ploy of some kind.

Hard to see F1 in Abu Dhabi after Bahrain (well, depends really on how much AD paid F1 I guess).

Anyhow if true, it would be cool. Abu Dhabi has no F1 circuit so it'll be a street F1...maybe should start calling your friends living near the corniche and telling them that you are coming to watch the F1 ;)

Rumours, rumours and we are adding to it!

But if anyone has insights, lets here!

Finally...someone should take pics from the event! Specially you Abu Dhabi 'autodealers'!

I remember reading on Autoblog that Bahrain has a 3 year contact with F1 to be the exclusive F1 circuit in the middle east, effectively barring all other cities in the region to host an F1 race.

my guess is that this will be a promotional event only.

According to Gulf News today:

Dubai: If the variables come together then speculation that Abu Dhabi will host a Formula One Grand Prix in 2009 is set to become a reality.

"Yes, it is going to happen," confirmed a source to Gulf News yesterday. The announcement is to be made this week on the sidelines of the F1 festival, organised by the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), to be hosted in the capital from February 1-4.
.....
.....

Sources close to one of the F1 teams believe that the race-track is likely to be built on one of the man-made islands, with a luxurious housing development, seen from the Corniche.

OK this just in - Bahrain's contract with F1 runs out in 2009 and thats when AUH is hoping to sing a new one. Bahrain will not pay as much as AUH is paying for renewal fees.

Today is just a promo event.

Gulf news reports that Alonso is here for the event. They also say that the legend Michael Schumacher is in the UAE as well. Not sure whether he will be in AUH.

Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro has confirmed that its drivers for the 2007 F1 World Championship season, Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen, will be in Abu Dhabi to take part in the F1 Festival on Saturday, 3rd February 2007. The event is now confirmed as the largest gathering of F1 cars and drivers ever assembled outside of a Grand Prix event.

The F1 Festival is free to the public. The street has been specially designed to give as many spectators as possible access to the thrills of Formula One. It will stretch along Abu Dhabi’s waterfront Corniche, from the Emirates Palace to the Marina Mall...

See you there guys...
