Import procedure - Emirati's Name

Postby Persian on Sun Mar 08, 2009 2:45 pm

Hi everyone!

I need urgently your help. One of my friends who is living in Dubai wants to buy a car from Europe. He wants to import the car in the name of an Emirati. Can anybody explain the procedure of importing a car from Europe to Dubai with every details?
The car is arriving in Jebel Ali in a container. Which documents are required? If the car leaves the ship what are the next steps?
I hope someone can help us with this issue.

Best Regards

Hey Persian! Welcome to the forums!

I don't get why you need to get it in the name of an Emirati? Is it to get lower duty rate or something?

The procedure is simple as long as you have all the correct papers. The export papers from Europe should be in order, and you should have the shippers papers to be able to receive the car.

Once the car arrives at the port, get one of the clearing agents to clear it for you. They charge around 500-1000 AED for this. They will tell you how much duty, etc has to be paid on it. You will get an import green slip paper, and you then take that to Tasjeel or Traffic police and get your car registered.

Someone wrote earlier that you can get the car without having a clearing agent at the port. Search through the forums to see that post.

If you import a car in the name of an Emirati, you don't have to pay the 5% import tax.

All papers from Europe are there. Invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and of course the B/L to get the car from the ship.

What is the work of a clearing agent?

I believe you still need to pay the 5% import duty, but maybe you know more. I know for those who import more than a couple of cars a year, they need to pay the commercial import duty which is 7%.

It seems you have all the papers.

The clearing agent, basically works with getting the stuff cleared at the port and customs and delivers you the car and papers.

I've also heard that the value of the car is something the customs determines on their own, and many time value the car much lower than it is...specially for used cars, so the 5% is sometimes much lower.

No, an Emirati can import one car per year without to pay any duty.

Are there special clearing agents for automobiles or can I take any clearing agent.

Do you have any contact details of clearing agents?

I did not know that. Seems a bit weird though, as then all dealers would import that way to save 5% and the state loses out.

Anyhow, clearing agents. I think a few have posted their services here (search the forums). Otherwise, you can find them at the port (Jebel Ali).

Look in Yellow pages for the full list. However, here are a few:

Re: Import procedure - Emirati's Name

Postby Persian on Wed Mar 11, 2009 8:32 pm

An Emirati can import only one car per year without to pay tax and of course the car must be registered on his name. I don't believe that this would be interesting for car dealers who import many cars per year. But this another issue.

Thanks for the list of the agents. I will contact some of them to see how they can help me.
