I would say - Honda CRV, looks sleek or aerodynamic as Honda guys wanna put it. For this price one gets sun roof, cruise control, alloy wheels, 6 CD in dash changer.

CRV is a good choice but it is 4cyl. Is the SantaFe a 5-seater SUV? How about the Qashqai?

The Santa-Fe is definitely a 5-seater but maybe also a 7-seater but those last 2 seats can't be very spacious.

Qashqai..that's also a 4-cylinder, I believe. It's popular in Europe where fuel prices are a lot higher. Over here it just arrived recently. Looks nice, but was not impressed by the interior when I saw it last time.

Santa Fe is a 7 seater. Qashqai is 4 cylinder.
Get the Xterra, quite easily the most powerful 5 seater SUV under 100k.

LOL! Off-roading is the sole purpose for which the Xterra was built!

Ford Escape is fine but it doesn't have good resale when compared to the Japs.

Both of them are very different vehicles.
CR-V is not at all for off-roading and was built for smooth drives around the city which it is pretty good at. While the Xterra is a hardcore "truck-based" 4x4 built for off-roading and is obviously less comfortable than the CR-V when driven around the city.

ok. i wouldn't be doing a lot of offroading. inthat case i guess the CR-V is a better option. how does the X-Trail compare to the CR-V?
