bought a car in the US, exporting it to Dubai

Postby basem_usa on Tue Jan 09, 2007 3:58 am

Hi All, I have a unique situation. I bought a 'brand new' car IN the US and I want to ship it to Myself in Dubai. I bought the car in the US being a US citizen and have the Manufacturer statement of origin in MY NAME from the car dealer. I want to ship it to MYSELF in Dubai. Issues? Recommendation?
Thanks,

If everything is in your name, it should be simple!

Get export papers from US and put it on a ship.
Go to the port it will arrive to and arrange the import papers (they will guide you on all thats needed).
You will then need to get it passed locally, road insurance and registered.

I'm specifically concerned that the car is brand new. I know that if the car is bought from an individual other than the car dealer in the US then it is considered a used car but in my situation, I'm buying the car directly from the Dealer brand new under my name as a US citizen and then I'm exporting to me in Dubai. Just wanted to specifically be sure about the New vs. Used or is it really the same. ie, should I export it to my wife or a friend in Dubai instead of me? Would it make a difference?? thanks...

I dont think it makes a difference as you pay the 5-6% duty that all GCC imports require.

But, again I dont do importing for a living, so I can be misinformed. To get the source, call Dubai Customs and ask them. They should know.
