more serious

On a more serious note, for 50k your best choice might be a Peugeot 307. The new one retails for around 90k, so I guess 3-4 old might be found for that price.
There is also the Renault Megane but I have not seen many here so it wont be easy to find it in second hand market.

Then we have the BMW 3-series, Audis and Saabs. For 50k, you will need to go back atleast 7-8 years...sometimes more.

Other choices are Alfa Spyders..nice looking car but temperamental.

You might find some nice SLK or CLK within your budget, but again I have not seen many for 50k.

Convertibles are hot commodities specially now with summer over.

There are a couple of Japanese roadsters that I love, which you might get in the price range, but they will also be 7+ years old.
One is the Mazda Miata or MX-3.
The other Honda S2000. They are however roadsters and 2-seaters.

Talking about roadsters, you can also get BMW Z3 within your budget.

If you want power, there is always the Mustang! You'll get a large engine, a lot of bhp, full 4 seats and a convertible. Resale sucks, but that also means you can get something decent in your price range.
