Toyota is hoping that the significantly different design of the 2013 Avalon will attract more consumers and would throw away public notions that this is a full-sized sedan with a dull design. According to Bob Carter, Toyota Division general manager, the 2013 Avalon has caught Toyota Motor Corp. President Akio Toyoda's vision for more exciting vehicles. The car’s design, particularly its fastback “kinetic energy” lines, was planned at Toyota's Calty studio in Southern California. According to Carter, the Avalon was engineered at Toyota's technical center, in Ann Arbor, Mich., making it the first Toyota vehicle entirely developed in North America. The Toyota Division general manager added that the vehicle will have 90 percent North American content when it hits the assembly lines in Georgetown, Ky.

The 2013 Avalon will have the same wheelbase as the current model at 111 inches, but it will be 2.3 inches shorter as Toyota reduces its front and rear overhangs. According to the company, the 2013 Avalon will be powered by a V-6 engine, with no details about its specs. The company expects the 2013 Avalon to be 120 lbs lighter than the current model.

The car will feature blind-spot warning system, 10 standard airbags and precollision warnings. The 2013 Avalon will also feature a sport-driving mode with quicker throttle response and more dynamic steering inputs. Toyota will commence selling the 2013 Avalon this fall at a base price of $33,955. With the new design, Carter expressed optimism about the sales prospects for the Avalon. Toyota only sold 28,925 units in 2011, a far cry from when it was launched in 2005 with 95,318 units.
