Sharjah: His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, yesterday opened a classic car club and botanical museum located at the Sharjah-Al Dhaid Road. This brings the number of museums in Sharjah up to 20. The classic car club features 120 cars owned by Shaikh Sultan. The cars manufactured between 1917 and 1960 are US and European made.

Is anyone a member of this club? How many other such Classic Car Clubs are there in the UAE? Do any of them have a website?

"The club will create plenty of activities for car enthusiasts, within a short period of time we will witness rallies as well as a rent-a-car system. Sharjah Police have given special plate numbers to the classic cars. The membership of the club will soon be available to UAE national and expatriates as well," Ahmad Mohammad Al Jarwan, director of the classic cars club said.

There is a ExoClass club for Classic and Vintage cars that made some news some time ago, but did not see any website come up. There are already clubs for offroading, ferrari, porsches, etc here.

Anyone know any more about these special plates? What type of classic cars are eligible...how old does a car need to be, how about RHD? Does an imported car need to pass an inspection to get such plates?

No idea!

Let us know if you learn more. If the Ruler of Sharjah is into this, then I'm sure that you can get nice plates..until Sharjah figures out that it is also more lucrative to auction the plates instead.

This museum is certainly up and running if you didn't already know. There's some videos of the place on Youtube.

Here's a good link with pics:

I saw a lot of these cars starting off from the car museum in Sharjah on the national day. The museum is on the Sharjah Airport road that goes towards Fujairah. I think you can get more information about registration over there. I have seen cars parked in Dubai with those maroon classic car plates, so not sure if its only Sharjah issuing them or everyone.
