Postby venki_venki on Thu Aug 09, 2007 11:38 am

hi everybody

i m new to UAE, and i m plan to buy SUV ( Mostly second hand Vechile, becoz i m new for driving also). I like BMW X5 very much, but my friends are said, it is very expensive in maintenance. i dont know what kind of maintenance it will have? what is the minimum maintenance cost per maintenance ?
i think BMW X5 will fullfil the SUV segment and Sports car effect.

if it really high maintenace vehicle, then what is the next choice, which vehicle will fullfill the X5, plz suggest me except Perche caynne

well if your buying used, dont buy something older than 2-3 yrs and look for a low mileage one (which will be hard). i dont know how much maintenance will be but surely more than a toyota, honda suv of the same size.

there are 3 models of the x5, the 3.0lt v6, the 4.6lt and the 4.8lt. performance is only there in the 4.8lt v8 engine. if your buying a 3.0lt v6 dont expect much performance as its got only 215hp :(

The 4.6l is fast enough too.
I recommend not to go for the X5 as already a new one is out. Forget the Porsche Cayenne and Touareg too. What about a Range Rover Sport? Or maybe a Mercedes ML?

My reason is that both SUVs have facelifted versions selling so doesn't make much sense to spend money and buy something that doesn't atleast look new.

Yeah, both the X5 and Touareg have new looks in the 2008 model.

For both these vehicles buying new might be a better option than buying 2-3 years old. Firstly because of face-lift, secondly because you get the 2-3 year maintenance contract with it when you buy. People normally forget this when comparing new and old prices.

Not sure about the Touareg, but the X5 comes with BMW full service plan when its sold here.

Touareg on the other hand seems to be great value for money starting at around 140k for the 2008 model for the V6 version.

The Lexus RX and Infiniti FX are also good options.

i can vouch for the lexus rx350, a relative owns one here and its a great suv. not blazing fast, but very powerful v6 with soft handling and very comfy ride.
good value for money too, fully loaded with nav, backup cam, bluetooth etc comes to aobut 170k AED.
excellent service too by lexus.

The Infiniti FX's are becoming quite popular here. I'm seeing loads of them on the road. Mainly FX35s and not that many FX45s.

I've seen a few 45s but you might be right about them not being available, and maybe just privately imported.

Though it would sound odd not to import it here, as the potential market here for such vehicles is higher than most other parts of the world.

The market might be high but all those on the road are imports, basically US (LHD).

High HP doesn't always mean more top speed. Depends on a lot of factors like weight, size, torque/hp curvature and engine speed.
Don't take top speed into consideration anyway because nearly all Mercs and Beemers come with a limiter. If you want real 'stop-light' speed, get something with good acceleration though I highly don't recommend buying a 2 ton SUV and 'racing' it, or racing any vehicle on public roads for that matter.
