Discuss the best SUV or 4-Wheel Drive to get or not to get....
by Inti on Mon Dec 11, 2006 11:52 am
Dear All,
I want to replace my existing Corolla with SUV, I am considering followings :-
1. Toyoto Prado 2.7 Ltr
2. Toyota Fortuner 2.7 Ltr
3. Honda CRV
4. Huyndai Santa FE
5. Ford Escape
My budget is upto AED 100,000. Selection Criteria will be the following -
1. Petrol Consumption Economy (I drive around 150km per day).
2. Low Maintainance
3. Safety (most of my drive is on Emirates Rd, Jabel ali-Lahbab Rd) and
3. Good Resale Value
I want your expert openion and advise, I know toyota Prado is higher on my budget, but I may consider one or two year used car.

that is a nice slection you got there...
but may i ask, do u wish to use the vehicle offroad?
i like the fortuner! isnt the Prado 2.7 above a 100K?
may wish to consider these as well:
- Nissan Xtrail
- Suzuki Vitara
- Toyota Rav4
- Mitsubishi Pajero 3.0
The above should meet your stated criteria as well
PS - let me point out that the Hyundai Sante Fe and Ford Escape will NOT have a good resale value.

Thanks for the prompt advise,
No I will not use this car Off Road.
Yes I know Prado GX will be higher than my budget, that is which I mentioned I may consider one or two year used one.
Someone told me X-trail will be discontinued next year.
also one friend of mine has Pajero gas consumption and maintainace in Pajero is high.
Thanks

WSF may i ask you to please expand on your statement about the Xtrail.
I would not recommend it if i did not think it was a good vehicle. Furthermore, since i have personally owned one for aprox. 3 years, i can vouch for it!

About the discontinuation of the Xtrail - i have no clue - but i do NOT think so because it is that in-between option for buyers. it may get a makeover but i dont think it will be removed.
its Nissans answer to the CRV and Rav4.
PS - consider the new Honda CRV - its just been released in a new shape that is very spacious and looks funky !
Also, in todays Gulf News is a 2007 Rav4 that has aprox. 5000 kms that you might be interested in calling
I was completely shocked by the new Rav4 - i have no clue how they managed to get that much room into that vehicle! Very Spacious - and looks good - plus its Toyota

BAN HIM! Double post! Just Kiddin!
The X-Trail wil not be discontinued next year, a redesigned one will be released so it doesn't make sense buying a new one now.
X-Trail, terrible? NO WAY! Personal experience tells me that this mini SUV rocks with its great interior and a powerful engine.
I am quite amazed by the new Rav4 too. I went with a friend to see one and it is very spacious in the back. Its just like sitting in a Caprice. Seriously! Amazing for something that doesn't look as big. You should consider it too as for 95k you'll get the top of the range model just lacking leather I guess. This is an SUV you won't regret buying.

Check out the Suzuki Vetara or Jimny nice small car 4x4. If you just want a bigger car not for off-road though I think Prado is your buddy.
Nissan VTEC 4.8 best off-road car

Prado is quite good at off-roading. Now if you are talking about the hardcore, over the top kind of off-roading, then NO stock 4x4 is capable enough.
Suzuki Grand Vitara is a nice ride since they updated it but buying it is still an 'at your own risk' case.
Jimny is old, outdated and needs a major redesign. Its not upto the standards of other mini SUVs.

Out of that list the i would vouch for the fortuner , prado or the pajero ....i guess engine pajero has got the biggest engine and fortuner has got slightly better off roading ability than the prado ...however both are better than the pajero..
However since u said that off roading is not a question .........then comfort wise the pajero 3.0 would be a nice ride ......especially the two door is sweet. Just that little more expense for fuel

I think comfort wise the CRV would be the best among the SUVs.

The Patrol 2-door isn't exactly a good ride for the city.
The NEW CRV is adorable, atleast from the front.
